Culture, as defined in Merriam-Webster, is "the beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society, group, place, or time." The BurkeBox is a starting point for ramblings in culture, local and worldly. The inhabitants of earth in all their forms, displays, and expressions fascinate me. Let the travels begin...

ONE of the pleasures of living in a creative space called Portland is the on-going encounter with street artists who never fail to enchant.  Who knew you could just make up an outfit or grab your violin and hit the street to entertain and open the minds of passersby.  The pictures below need no explanation. I particularly liked the military boots accompanying the violin artist who just happened to be playing a selection from Bach’s Cello Suite.  Gasp!  Visual and audio expression at its best and…


The Debate on Climate Change

In reference to the on-going debate about the cause of our climate change,  this image truly cuts through all the well worn political dialogue on the issue.  Below is a picture of  part of an installation by Isaac Cordal, an artist from Galacia.  It is titled Follow the Leaders.
